This idea struck me the summer of 2008 while on a trip to Toronto. My girlfriend and I were doing some exploring with our
friends when we decided to check out the local SPCA. I wasn’t aware of the ban on Pitbulls in the province of Ontario
until I asked a volunteer why there were so many there. This really broke my heart, considering I knew for a fact that Pitbulls
ranked 2nd with the American Temperament Test Society. That’s right, far ahead of the Cocker Spaniel, Yorkshire Terrier,
and even Daschund. Who would of thought?
We spent about two hours in the shelter looking around at these beautiful,
misunderstood guys when I said to my girlfriend “We’ve got to do something about this”.
We live in
a province commonly falling to a stereotype of a bunch of fishermen, or uneducated folk. So really when it comes down to it,
who could ask for a better place to start a rescue group like this? A bunch of misunderstood caring people and a bunch of
misunderstood caring dogs!
Unfortunately, the stigma surrounding these beautiful animals casts them in a pretty poor
light. Pitbulls are seen as aggressive, dominant, killers that should be viewed by one and all as a threat, especially towards
children and other animals. Pitbulls are trained and used in dog fighting, as guard and attack dogs and are portrayed in the
media as nothing more than powerful muscle bound bodies with huge jaws full of sharp snapping teeth, ready to tear apart anything
that crosses their path.
Fortunately there are those of us that know better! These dogs are loving, loyal, affectionate
and ARE NOT human aggressive. They are used as therapy dogs. Service dogs, and Search and Rescue dogs. They are great with
kids and make amazing family pets. When dogs are trained to be aggressive and dangerous it’s the fault of the owner,
not the dog. Punish the deed, not the breed!
We will be working with some shelters on the mainland to find homes here
in Newfoundland for some of these dogs.
This group is for anyone and everyone who loves these dogs. The abuse and injustice
will only stop with education so let’s give these underdogs the chance they deserve.
Thanks again for stopping
